“It's in the Stars
Hotels are blending stargazing and astrology to craft immersive cosmic experiences. By Kinsey Gidick
ON A CRISP January evening in Virginia, the roof of an observatory slid open to reveal a glittering night sky.
A hush enveloped the room as two high-end Celestron telescopes zeroed in on distant stars.
"There's the Orion Nebula," said Lauren Peery, the director of astronomy at Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection (doubles from $744). Then another expert took center stage: Rebecca Gordon, an in-demand astrologer based in New York, was there to spin tales of Aldebaran, which represents the eye in the constellation Taurus, and Sirius, the Dog Star. Her talk added another layer to the evening-and a starting point for private horoscope readings for guests.
Astrology is something of a trend in travel, according to the booking site Skyscanner: a recent survey revealed an astonishing 74 percent of U.S.
Gen Zers are interested in using the Zodiac to plan a trip.
It's no wonder, then, that more and more hotels are thinking along cosmic lines. In March, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa (doubles from $609) launched a "Written in the Stars" program timed to that month's lunar eclipse. "The island sits 20 degrees north of the equator, offering clear views of 80 out of 88 constellations," explains Edward Mahoney, the property's director of astronomy. In addition to stargazing and astrophotography, guests had the chance to book birth-chart readings.
The nearby Grand Wailea Maui, a Waldorf Astoria Resort (doubles from $899) has also tapped in to the trend, aligning treatments at its Kilolani Spa with Kaulana Mahina, the Hawaiian lunar calendar. "Hawaiians believe the moon controls how we feel," says Kalei 'Uweko'olani, the resort's cultural programming manager and leadership educator. Spa rituals feature locally sourced essential oils and meditation sessions. During Hoku, as the night of the full moon is known in Hawaiian, guests can participate in sound baths and other lunar-centric ceremonies.
And in Mexico, Paradero Todos Santos (doubles from $695) is also riding the wave, with nighttime catamaran trips through the Sea of Cortés complete with astrology readings and moonlit meditations.”
